- enTransformation, Mitsubishi Corporation Energy and Uyeno Yuso Commence Actual Driving Demonstration Testing Using Diesel-Hydrogen Assist Technology (D-HAT™) to Reduce CO2 Emissions from Trucks Equipped with Large Diesel Engines
en Transformation Co., Ltd. (Tokyo, President and CEO: Yasuo Kida), Mitsubishi Corporation Energy Co., Ltd. (Tokyo, President and CEO: Koichi Minami, hereinafter Mitsubishi Corporation Energy), Uyeno Yuso Ltd. (Kawasaki, President and COO: Toru Kaida, hereinafter Uyeno Yuso) announced today plans to commence joint demonstration testing using the diesel-hydrogen assist technology D-HAT™ for diesel engines developed and sold by the US startup Hydrogen On Demand Technologies for the purpose of verifying the CO2 reduction impact of trucks equipped with large diesel engines.

Background and purpose
The shift to EVs and FCVs is progressing in the automotive industry in conjunction with the acceleration of the global trend toward decarbonization. However, this shift is expected to take longer for trucks with large diesel engines due to cost and battery supply conditions. This being the case and recognizing the need to reduce CO2 in large diesel engines, the three companies decided to conduct demonstration testing to verify the CO2 reduction impact of improving fuel efficiency using D-HAT™. D-HAT™ is a highly efficient proton exchange membrane type of water electrolysis device (also referred to has a PEM cell), patented in the United States, that generates hydrogen and feeds it into the engine, thereby increasing the combustion efficiency of the diesel engine. This method is expected to improve fuel efficiency, reduce PM*¹ and NOx*², and reduce vehicle maintenance costs.

Outline of the Demonstration Test
Installation of D-HAT1000 on two large diesel engines of trucks owned by Uyeno Yuso and to measure the benefit to fuel efficiency and to verify the CO2 reductions.
Start date: June 27, 2023
Expectations
If the initial testing shows there is a benefit of CO2 reduction through improved fuel efficiency, the three companies plan to conduct demonstration testing to verify the amount of reduction in terms of PM and NOx as well as maintenance costs. This will involve verification of the overall effect of reducing GHG and harmful substances, with a focus on using it in conjunction with biodiesel fuel supplied by Mitsubishi Corporation Energy.
